Triangulation Series, 2017

The Triangulation Series is a collection of digital images created by Yolanda del Riego (YR), constructed around the central figure of a triangle. Influenced by recent global uncertainties, the works in this series manifest her concern over the negative consequences of climate change and how these might lead to increased global turmoil.

In my work, I try to materialize what I feel. Inevitably, it is a reflection of what I see or read  —the images we are bombarded with on the television and in the press, or what scientists and politicians say. My perception is that of a changing, extreme and uncertain world.

I have created these images in the hopes of raising awareness about climate change. I believe we as humanity must find a way to preserve Nature’s fragile balance.

I try to find connections between my feelings and the complexities of the situation. I hope that others can also find their own connections and interpretations in my works.

[La serie Triangulación], 2017

La serie Triangulación es una colección de imágenes digitales creadas por Yolanda del Riego, construidas alrededor de la figura central de un triángulo. Influenciadas por las recientes incertidumbres globales, las obras manifiestan su preocupación por las consecuencias negativas del cambio climático y cómo éstas podrían conducir al aumento de conflictos globales.

En mi trabajo, trato de materializar lo que siento. Inevitablemente, es un reflejo de lo que veo o leo —las imágenes que nos bombardean en la televisión y en la prensa, o lo que dicen los científicos y los políticos. Veo un mundo cambiante, extremo e incierto.

He creado estas imágenes con la esperanza de crear conciencia sobre el cambio climático. Creo que como humanidad debemos encontrar una forma de preservar el frágil equilibrio de la Naturaleza.

Trato de encontrar conexiones entre mis sentimientos y las complejidades de la situación actual. Espero que otros también encuentren sus propias conexiones e interpretaciones en mis obras.

Triangulation Through Science Communication

Works from the Triangulation Series were used to create three mosaic paneles that formed the basis of he Triangulation Through Science Communication art project, which was created for the 4th European Conference for Science Journalists in Copenhagen (June 2017).

Obras de la serie de Triangulación fueron utilizadas para crear tres paneles de mosaicos que sirvieron de base para el proyecto de arte Triangulación a través de la comunicación científica, que se creó para la IV Conferencia Europea de Periodistas Científicos en Copenhague (junio de 2017).

About the compositions

Yolanda del Riego often develops an idea through a series of variations, which allows her to explore a subject in-depth. Each variation takes her down a different path, and the Triangulation Series currently has over 93 variations. 

Common to all the variants in the series is the central figure of a triangle, which Yolanda del Riego uses as scaffolding for each individual composition.

I've developed this series around a triangle. I've always loved geometric shapes, and my favorite shape is the triangle. It's a strong shape, loaded with symbolic richness, that can bear the weight of my fears and mental images about climate change.  —YR

Interwoven throughout the works are diverse manifestations of nature (twisted trees, coastlines) along with the artist’s depictions of the effects of climate change —melting ice caps, rising sea levels, waves of mass migration, etc

Sobre las composiciones

A Yolanda del Riego le gusta desarrolla una idea a través de una serie de variaciones, lo que le permite explorar un tema en profundidad. Cada variación la lleva por un camino diferente, y la serie Triangulación tiene actualmente más de 93 variaciones.

Común a todas las variantes de la serie es la figura central de un triángulo, que Yolanda del Riego utiliza como andamiaje en cada composición individual.

He desarrollado esta serie alrededor de un triángulo. Siempre me han gustado las formas geométricas, y mi forma favorita es el triángulo. Es una forma fuerte, cargada de riqueza simbólica, que puede soportar el peso de mis miedos e imágenes mentales sobre el cambio climático. —YR

Entretejido en las obras hay diversas manifestaciones de la naturaleza (árboles retorcidos, litorales), junto con representaciones de los efectos del cambio climático —el deshielo de los casquetes polares, el aumento del nivel del mar, oleadas de migraciones climáticas, etc.
