Beyond the Limits (2022)
EXHIBITION: Beyond the Limits. The Works of Yolanda del Riego through her techniques
November 3, 2022 – January 20, 2023 (Extended through January 20)
Museo Luis González Robles, University of Alcalá de Henares
Catalog text written by Elena Santiago Páez
Anthological exhibition inspired by the words of art historian and critic Francesc Miralles in his catalog text for the exhibition Yolanda del Riego. Recent Works (1999, Galería EUDE, Barcelona) —words that are still valid more than twenty years later:
The work of Yolanda del Riego is a frontier work. Its interest and importance are based on its surpassing the limits. (…) Yolanda del Riego constructs works that extend beyond the limits of technique and beyond the limits of what is in sight.

The many techniques that Yolanda del Riego has used throughout the 50 years of her artistic career serve as the underlying thread for this retrospective exhibition. Printmaking works, paintings and digital artworks make up an important share of the exhibition. Also present are drawings and collage, as well as "paper objects" (paper handmade by the artist on which she has also drawn or embossed with an etching press), "textiludios" (pieces of fabric sewn together like a collage) and the "post-digital" works of mixed media where the artist combines the repertoire of techniques acquired throughout her career, sometimes reworking and re-imagining works that were begun years ago.
The exhibition includes 88 artworks, a selection of Yolanda del Riego’s finest artworks —many of them unpublished and others from her private collection, spanning five decades: from her initial studies of live drawings (1974) to recent works (2022).
The processes behind printmaking are not widely known by the general public. The exhibition includes educational content on the different types of plates (metal, wood, stone, linoleum), their elaboration (etching, engraving), inking, and printing.
